Jeffrey H. Smulyan founded and has been the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Emmis Communications, a diversified operating company of media and technology businesses since 1979. He also serves on the board of directors and as Chief Executive Officer of MediaCo Holding Inc. (“MediaCo Holding”), a recent Nasdaq-listed spin off from Emmis Communications. Mr. Smulyan has developed and invested in various media, technology, sports and entertainment companies since founding Emmis Communications. As principal owner, he led a group that purchased the Seattle Mariners baseball team in 1989. He also served on the Major League Baseball ownership and television committees. In his role at Emmis Communications, Mr. Smulyan built a global portfolio of media assets by acquiring 38 large market radio stations and 16 television stations during domestic deregulation of media ownership limits. He also extended this expertise into global markets by acquiring assets throughout Eastern Europe during a period of post-communist privatization, as well as Western Europe and Latin America, and building the largest platform of city/regional magazines including titles such as Texas Monthly, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. He successfully built top-rated radio brands in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, as well as San Francisco, Houston, Washington DC, Boston, Phoenix, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Austin, and Indianapolis. Throughout his career at Emmis Communications, Mr. Smulyan has closed more than 75 transactions (both acquisitions and divestitures) totaling over $5 billion of transaction value.
